How to run a search

invenio offers two different types of search:

  1. a general search with one or more search terms – either as a simple search, an advanced search or a name search.
  2. a navigating search, which is similar to flicking through a printed catalogue.

Searches are always carried out in the descriptive information on the documents (“cataloguing information”, i.e. title, contents note, fonds description). There is no full-text search in the documents.

A file can only be viewed online if it is available as a digital copy. Files that have not been digitised can be requested for use in the reading room. If you would like to request copies or scans, please contact the responsible department.

Number of hits after a search:

Some of the items and cataloguing information in the Federal Archives are subject to terms of protection under the provisions of the Federal Archives Act (BArchG) and are therefore not freely available on the Internet.

As a result, you might be shown a different number of hits on the Internet. If this is the case, please do not hesitate to contact the team at the Federal Archives to find out whether you can view those files. We particularly recommend submitting a written request to the Federal Archives when searching for persons, as a lot of personal data is still subject to terms of protection and cannot be searched for externally. The contact details can be found on our website.
