How to link your user account with eID

If you have been granted the reduction of a term of protection, you can link your invenio user account to your eID to search for items with restricted access from the comfort of your own home and view digital copies that are not freely available on the Internet. You can find more information on shortening terms of protection in the article “What are the advantages of signing in with eID?” and in the eID overview.

To link your account with eID, you will need:

  •  an identity document with an activated eID function
  •  a compatible reader
  • AusweisApp2

You can find more information and a link to download the app on the information portal of the Federal Ministry of the Interior.

The eID function in invenio is currently only optimised for desktop use. You may encounter problems on iOS (iPhone, iPad), but a possible solution can be found in the FAQ for AusweisApp2.

How to link your user account with eID:

  1. Install AusweisApp2 and connect the reader to your PC.
  2. Log in to invenio with your username and password, and then click on the Personalausweis zuordnen (add ID) button in the Benutzerdaten (user) tab, which can be accessed via the Benutzerdaten (user details) menu.
  3. Choose your country from the list and click the Weiter button.
  4. AusweisApp2 will open automatically. Follow the instructions in the app and reader.
  5. After linking your user account with your ID, you will be able to sign in to invenio with your ID instead of your username and password.

After linking your user account or registering with eID, you will be able to ask the Federal Archives to unlock the necessary rights for your usage topic. If your requests have already been approved in the past, you do not have to submit them again. You will then be able to run the same search in the restricted fonds, which you were previously only able to do on the PCs in the reading rooms at the Federal Archives. If you would like to have terms of protection shortened, please submit a request to the Federal Archives. The contact details of the relevant departments can be found on our website.
