As stipulated in Section 11 (1) of the Federal Archives Act (BArchG), the general term of protection for federal archive material is 30 years. In other words, federal archive material is made available 30 years after its creation, unless other restrictions apply. The time of a document’s creation is determined by the date it was last edited.
